1Decide
It is four hundred metres to your friend's house and you have done it a hundred times.
Right, and the boring reason is the correct one. Short rides are most of your rides, so most of your chances to crash are on them. There is also no version of that trip where the helmet costs you more than about eight seconds.
Think about where your riding actually happens. Nearly every ride you take is a short one on a street you know well. If the helmet only comes out for the long ones, it is off for almost all of your riding time. Every ride means every ride.

3Decide
A car is waiting to pull out of a driveway ahead, and the driver is looking your way.
Yes. Looking your way and seeing you are two different things, and the only version of that guess which costs you nothing is the one where you assumed wrong. Easing off early also gives back some of the extra distance this machine needs to stop.
Careful with this one. A driver facing you may be looking through you at the gap, and judging that gap against a bicycle’s speed rather than yours. Going faster shortens the time they have to notice you, which is the opposite of what you want. Ease off and be ready to be missed.

5Decide
You are leaving at half past six and the sun is still up.
Right. The lights go on before you leave because that is the only moment you are stopped and thinking about it. Almost nobody pulls over halfway home in falling light to sort out a rear light they could have switched on in the drive.
Think about when you would switch them on instead. The light goes from fine to not fine gradually, so there is never an obvious moment to stop, and by the time there is one you are already riding. Before you leave is the only reliable time.
