What we know, what we don’t, and who can see it.
Most questions we get are about privacy. Here are the honest answers, including the ones that are not entirely in our favor.
We hold your child’s first name and an age band. Nothing else. None of it is public, none of it is shared, and none of it is for sale.
Your family’s records live on your own site, under your control. You decide what each child can see. You decide when a child has earned a badge. We do not certify children and we keep no register of them.
What we know about your child.
What do you actually know about my child?
Their first name and an age band. That is the whole list.
Not their surname, not their birthday, not their address, not their school, not a photograph. We do not ask for those things because we do not need them, and the safest information is the information nobody collected.
Is anything about my child public?
No. Nothing about your child is published, shared, sold, or visible to anybody outside your family. There is no directory, no profile page, no search.
Your family’s records live on your own site, under your control.
Does my child need their own email address?
No. You create your child’s account and you set up how they sign in. You can change it or reset it whenever you want.
A child never has to hand over an email address to use Badge Kids.
Can my children see each other’s work?
No. A child signs in and sees only themselves — their own courses, their own progress, their own badges.
They cannot see a brother’s or sister’s name, scores, or anything else. You can see all of them. They can only see themselves.
Can my child talk to other children through this?
No. There is no messaging, no chat, no comments, no forum, no leaderboard, no friends list, and no way for one child to see another child anywhere in Badge Kids.
It is your child, the material, and you.
Who controls what.
Who controls our account?
Whoever bought it. The card that paid holds full control, the same way the owner of anything else does.
You can give a second adult the same access, and you can take it away again whenever you like. Nobody else can add or remove people from your family’s account.
Can I choose which courses each child gets?
Yes, and that is the point. You decide, child by child, which courses, sections, lessons, quizzes and certificates each of them can see.
A ten-year-old can have Home Alone Ready without having the first-job material. That is your judgment to make, not a rule the software imposes on you.
What can I see as a parent?
Everything your children do:
- Whether they actually opened and worked through each piece.
- Whether they passed or failed, and what they scored.
- When they did it.
It is there so you know where they got to, and so the two of you can have an honest conversation about whether they are ready for the thing they are asking for.
Who decides my child has earned a badge?
You do. Badge Kids shows you what your child did. You decide they have earned it, and you issue the certificate.
We do not certify children. That was a deliberate choice. The agreement is between you and your child, and it should stay there.
The code, and what it cannot do.
What is the bike plate?
A plate your child can print and put on their bike after they finish the Road Badge. It carries a code — a string of characters, nothing else.
It is a nice thing for a child to have earned, and it does one useful job for you, described below.
Could somebody use that number to find my child?
No. The number is not connected to your child’s name, your address, your school, or anything else. There is no lookup anybody can do with it. If a stranger types that number into our site, they are told nothing at all — not even whether the number is real.
It is also worth saying plainly: a child’s bike is already recognizable on sight, far more than a code on a plate. The plate does not make your child findable. It was designed so that it could not.
So what is the plate actually for?
If a neighbor sees a child riding in a way that worries them, they can enter the plate code on our site with a short message. We pass that message on to you privately.
That is the entire mechanism. The person sending it never learns who your child is, where they live, or whether the code even exists. You get the message, and what you do with it is up to you.
It gives a neighbor a way to reach a parent without a confrontation on the street, and without knowing anything about your family.
Will you give my child’s records to police, schools or anybody else?
No, and we have built it so that we could not be much use if asked.
We sold a course to you. You administered it to your own children, on your own site. We are not in the record-keeping business on behalf of anybody, and we hold no national register of children. That is the whole reason the design keeps the records with you rather than with us.
What you get, and what happens to it.
Is this an official certification?
No. Badge Kids is educational. It teaches a child something worth knowing and gives you a way to see that they have done the work.
A badge is not a license, a permit or a registration, and it does not give a child permission to do anything. Only you can do that.
What happens if I cancel?
Everything is yours to download and print for as long as you are a member — certificates, plates, records, all of it. Take copies of anything you want to keep.
When you cancel, your family’s site and everything on it is removed. We are telling you that plainly rather than burying it, because it is the honest consequence of your records living with you instead of with us. Download what you want first.
Can I print things out?
Yes. A certificate to put on a wall, the bike plate, and a copy of what your children have done. They are yours.
How many children can I add?
Every child in your household. One price covers all of them, and a fourth child costs nothing extra.
Do the courses get updated?
Yes. When we improve a course, your site can pull the newer edition. Each course shows which version it is and when it was last updated, so you always know what your child is reading.
Updates arrive as a fixed edition rather than changing under your child mid-way through. If they are part way through, they finish the version they started.
