When It Goes Wrong

This is the last badge in the course, and that is not an accident of how we ordered it. Every riding programme anybody has surveyed — motorcycle, cycling, school, national — teaches the quick stop and the swerve last, after control and after perception, and not one of them deviates. This badge is why they do that, and then it is the moves themselves: stopping harder than you have ever stopped, getting round something you saw too late, gravel and wet paint and a grate that eats wheels, rails crossed square, a door, and a dog that two manuals cannot agree about.
