You know that stretch of road is a bad place for it. You are on it, and your friends are already filming.
Yes, and that is the whole method. The decision belongs somewhere calm, before the wanting arrives, and then the moment is only a matter of doing what you already decided. Adult rider training calls that risk acceptance, and it is taught as a skill rather than a personality.
Deciding carefully in the moment sounds right, and it is the thing that does not work. Reward and emotion are already running by then and the arguing part turns up late. That is not weakness, it is timing. Move the decision earlier, to a place where nothing is happening, and the moment stops being a decision at all.

Your phone buzzes twice in your pocket, halfway down a road you know well.
Right, and the reason is the deciding bar. The phone costs you the first half of your stop, on a road where you have already decided nothing is going to happen. If it matters, it still matters in four minutes, and it will matter from a kerb with both feet down.
Reading it low and quickly is the version everybody thinks is safe. Your eyes are still off the road and your response time is still longer, on exactly the sort of familiar street where riders stop looking for driveways. The message is not the problem. The metres are.

5Decide
It is dark, your friend's ride has fallen through, and it is a mile home.
Yes, and it is the answer that solves the actual problem. The friend gets home, you get home, and the machine gets home. Pushing it is slow and slightly annoying, which is the entire cost. Every other option on this card spends something you cannot get back.
This is the version of the decision that catches good riders, because it comes with a genuine reason. Being stuck, in the dark, with a friend, is precisely when the rule gets bent. That is why it is a policy rather than a judgement call, and why the walking answer is worth having ready before the night it comes up.

Your friends have a phone out and there is a clear empty stretch of your street.
Yes, and notice what the reason is. It is not that the trick is beyond you. It is that the middle of a public road is exactly the behaviour three separate police departments are describing, and that a driveway can put a car across your line without warning.
Both of the other answers are the ones being written up in the reports. The middle of the road is the first thing Chief Grage names, and the sidewalk is barred for low-speed e-bikes under Illinois law anyway, with pedestrians on it who did not choose any of this. The empty stretch is only empty until a driveway is not.

Somebody offers to unlock your machine in an afternoon, free, and says it just removes a software limit.
Right, and the reason is the paperwork rather than the speed. The wattage on that label is the number that decides what the state calls your machine, so it is the number to check before anybody changes anything. Fitting the brakes to a machine that is now doing 50 is not on the menu.
Just a software limit is the sentence that does the damage. A limit that comes off in software still moves the machine over the line the state draws at 750 watts, and over that line it needs a licence, plates, insurance and a title. It also happens to a machine whose brakes and tyres were certified for the old number.

It is late, you are not right, and the machine is chained to a fence a mile from home.
Yes, and the lock is what makes it easy. Leave it, call, come back tomorrow. The whole cost of that decision is one awkward phone call and one trip back, which is why it is worth arranging the phone call before you ever need it.
Look at what each of these actually spends. Riding is the option the hospital study is about. Pushing an unlocked machine a mile down an unlit road at night keeps you on the road for an hour and hands you something else to worry about. Leaving it locked costs you one call and one walk back tomorrow.
