Not yours yet

Matches. Lighters. Candles. The stove. None of these are yours yet. Not to use, and not to move.

Some of them you will get when you are older. Not now. When it is time, a grown-up will show you.

If you find one

You find a lighter on the table. Do not pick it up. Do not put it in a drawer. Do not carry it to a grown-up.

Leave it where it is. Tell a grown-up where it is. They do the moving. That is the whole job.

Zara and the pan

Zara sees flames coming out of a pan. She wants to throw water on it. Water on a cooking fire makes it bigger.

Zara leaves the kitchen. She finds Dad. She says fire, in the kitchen. If you see fire, you leave and you tell. You do not put it out.

5Say it

The only thing you have to say

Say this loud enough to be heard in the next room

“Fire. In the kitchen.”

Two words and a place. That is enough. The grown-up does the rest.

6Decide

The lighter is in your hand.

Right. Not yours, even to move. You tell a grown-up where it is. They do the moving.

Moving it feels helpful. But it is still in your hand. Matches, lighters and candles are never yours, even to carry. Put it down. Tell a grown-up where it is.

Water feels right. On a cooking fire it makes it worse. Watching wastes the seconds. Leave and tell. That is your whole job.
