The fourth move

Tell tonight is the fourth move. It gets more room than the other three, because it matters most.

Tell tonight means a grown-up hears it today, before you go to sleep. Not next week. Not when it stops feeling funny.

Tattling is my sister used my pens. It gets somebody in trouble.

Telling is a big kid keeps following me home. Telling gets somebody out of trouble. Ask: in, or out? Out is telling.

Leo tells twice

Leo tells Grandma: something happened and I need to tell you. Grandma says mm and keeps watching telly. Nothing happens.

So Leo tells Dad when he gets in. Dad puts his phone down and listens. If the first grown-up does nothing, tell a different one. Keep going.

Right. That one gets you out of something. The others get somebody into something. Only one is a job.

Ask: does this get somebody in trouble, or somebody out of it? Pens and balls are in. A kid following you is out. Out is telling.

Say this in your normal voice

“Something happened and I need to tell you.”

Say it, then stop. The grown-up does the questions.

You told Grandma. She said mm and kept watching telly. What now?

Right. Keep going. Tell tonight means somebody hears it tonight. If not her, somebody else.

You did the hard bit. But nobody has done anything yet, so it is not finished. Tell a different grown-up. Keep going until one of them does something.

Maybe you only manage the telling. Your voice was small. You forgot the middle bit. That is fine.

A kid who only manages the telling has still done the important part. The grown-up does everything else.
