Step 1 of 10

1Watch

The park fence

Film

The park fence

A kid by a park fence, a bigger kid on the other side saying come round here, I have got something, and the small kid's hand tightening on the wire.

18 seconds

It stops there. The kid has three moves.

2The idea

The Four Moves

There are four moves. Say it. Leave. Be loud. Tell tonight. This lesson is the first three.

Say it. Leave. Be loud. In that order.
Say it: no, in your ordinary voice.
Leave: walk away.
Be loud: one big word, so people look.

3The idea

Say it, then leave

Say no in your ordinary voice. Not a whisper, not a shout. Stand up straight while you say it. No is a whole sentence.

If they keep going, you leave. Walk to your grown-up or the busy bit of the park. Leaving is not rude. You never have to finish a conversation.

4The idea

Ben at the fence

The bigger kid says come round here. Ben says no, in his normal voice, standing straight. The bigger kid says do not be rude, come on.

Ben leaves. He walks to the swings where his mum is. Ben did not explain. He did not say sorry. He said no, then his feet did the rest.

5Look

What loud looks like

Still image

Loud

A kid standing up straight, mouth wide open, hands by their sides. Not crying, not stamping.

Loud is a tool. It is not a tantrum. It is for when leaving is not working.

6Build it

Put them in order

Interactive

Order the moves

Three cards, shuffled: Say it, Leave, Be loud. Drag them into the right order. The card locks and shows the order when it is right.

First one first. You only go to the next one if you need it.

7Decide

You said no. He says: do not be rude, come on. What now?

Right. Leaving is not rude. You never have to finish a conversation.
Explaining feels polite. But it keeps you there. You said no. Now your feet do the next bit. Leave.

Pick one to carry on.

8Say it

The actual volume

Say this loud enough to make somebody look

“No. Go away.”

You need the real volume. Practise it now, while nobody needs it.

9Again

Which one is Be loud?

Right. Straight up, one big word, everyone looks. That is the point.
Loud is not crying and it is not stamping. It is one big word, standing up, so people turn round.

Pick one to carry on.

10Do it

Before you leave this page

Say NO loud enough that somebody in the next room hears it. Then go and ask them if they did.

Tick it when you have done it.

Lesson done.

Say it. Leave. Be loud. In that order.

Next lesson: Tell tonight
