It's slow on purpose
Recognise that weeks of ordinary friendly chat can be the method, and explain why the slowness matters.
1Watch
Six weeks in ninety seconds
Six weeks in ninety seconds
A chat window with a date in the corner that runs fast. Day one: a comment about a game. Day four: a joke. Day nine: a question about school. Day nineteen: they remember her dog's name. Day thirty: 'you can tell me anything'. Day forty-one: 'we should talk somewhere more private'. It stops on that message.
30 secondsNothing in there looked wrong on the day it happened. That is the point.
2The idea
You know what a creepy message looks like. This is not that.
You have deleted a weird DM before. Everybody has. The version worth knowing about is not weird. It is patient, funny, interested in you, and in no hurry at all. Weeks of ordinary conversation is not the absence of a method. It is the method.
The waiting is doing a job. It is making the person feel like a friend before anything is asked for. Police have a word for it: grooming. The people who do it do not call it anything. They just call it chatting.
3The idea
The shape it takes, most times
It is not always in this order, but the pieces are nearly always these:
1. A shared interest. Your game, your team, your music.
2. Remembering. Small things you said weeks ago.
3. Taking your side. Against a teacher, a friend, a parent.
4. Secrets. ‘You can tell me anything.’ ‘Don’t tell them we talk.’
5. Moving. ‘Let’s go somewhere more private.’
6. The ask. A picture, a call, a meet.
Steps one to four feel like friendship because they are the same things friendship is made of. The difference is that a friend is not working through a list, and does not have a step six.
4The idea
Watch it work once
Ella, thirteen, gets a comment on a post about her game from someone whose profile says fourteen. Week one: the game. Week two: he asks about her weekend and remembers it. Week three: her mum is being unfair about screen time and he agrees, completely. Week five: ‘you’re easier to talk to than anyone I know, don’t tell your mum about me though, she’d get weird’.
Week six: ‘add me on the other app, it’s more private’. Ella looks back at the whole thing in one go and sees a list, not a friend. She never met him. She does not know his age. She shows the chat to her mum that night, which is the first time anyone but him has read it.
5Your turn
Play it week by week
The slow reveal
The same six-week chat, one message at a time. After each one, tap Fine or Twitchy. At the end the card shows where most people first felt it, and where it actually started.
Most people put their first Twitchy in week five. Look at what happened in week one.
6Decide
Which of these is the tell, on its own?
Pick one to carry on.
7Say it
The sentence that names it
Say it in your own words if you like
“Nobody spends six weeks being nice to a kid for nothing.”
You will need it the day you catch yourself thinking ‘but they have never asked me for anything’.
8Find them
Which of these belong to the slow version?
Tap the ones that count.
Find all 4.
9The idea
What you do with it
You do not have to stop talking to people online. You have to step back once in a while and look at the whole chat, not the last message. Run the Two Questions on it. Would I be happy telling Mum about this after? If the honest answer is no, or ‘she wouldn’t get it’, that is the reading.
And the simplest move of all: tell a parent you have an online friend you have never met. Not as a confession. As a fact, like telling them a name from school. A friend that nobody at home knows about is exactly what step four is for.
10Do it
Before you leave this page
Explain to a parent, in your own words, how the slow version works. Not what this page said; how you would tell a friend. Two minutes, no screen.
Tick it when you have done it.
Lesson done.
The slowness is the method. Nothing is being waited out except you.
