1Decide
Your phone is on three percent. Where does it charge?
The desk. Hard, flat, nothing over it, air all round. It charges faster there too, because it is not cooking itself. The floor is fine as well, if the desk is full.
Feel the back of your phone after twenty minutes charging. That heat has to go somewhere. Under a pillow or between cushions, it has nowhere to go, and the cloth is right there. Hard surface, nothing on top.

3Decide
You are upstairs. The alarm goes off downstairs. You cannot smell anything.
Out, by your planned way, then call from outside. If it was toast, you have lost two minutes. If it was not, you have lost nothing at all. Not smelling anything upstairs tells you nothing about downstairs.
The alarm is not asking you to check. Going to look walks you towards the smoke. Waiting lets it come to you. Neither is a plan. Down, out, and find out what it was from the pavement.

5Decide
Upstairs bedroom. You touch the door with the back of your hand. It is hot.
Door shut, window open, be loud. Something along the bottom of the door, then 911 with the room named. You are doing two jobs at once: keeping the smoke out and making sure the people coming know exactly where you are.
A hot door has fire behind it, and opening it lets the fire in. Staying quiet behind it is half right: the door stays shut. But nobody can find a quiet room. Window open, shout, wave, and tell 911 which room.

7Decide
Where is the meeting place?
The lamppost. One thing, across the road, that a five-year-old could point at. Far enough from the house that the firefighters can get in, and close enough that everybody arrives in seconds.
Outside is where everybody already is. It is not a place. The front garden is in the way of the people coming to help and too close to the house. A meeting place has to be one specific thing, away from the house, that a person could point at.
