Thirty minutes. You have done the list twice. Nothing. What is next?
That one. Cot, door, phone. The baby is safe, you are a step back from her, and the parent gets to decide what happens next. Say it on the phone in a level voice: four facts, then the question.
Not that. Bouncing harder is what a wound-up person does, and a wound-up person is the risk in the room. Scrolling for tips with a screaming baby on your lap is thirty more minutes of the same. The list is done. The next step is the cot and the call.

3Decide
He is screaming on the floor by the open oven door. What comes first?
Right. Safety is step one and it comes before your voice. Once he is clear of the oven, everything else in the lesson applies: low, near, quiet, wait. The order matters because a hot oven does not wait for a tantrum to finish.
Not first. The words are right and the biscuit is wrong, but neither of them is the first thing. Anything dangerous gets stopped before anything else happens. Oven door shut, child moved, then you sit down and say the line.

5Decide
The bottle has come out of the fridge. How do you warm it?
That one. Slow, even, and impossible to overheat by much. Then the wrist test anyway, every time, because the jug being right does not mean the bottle is. A minute longer is never the mistake.
Not that. A microwave heats milk in patches, so the outside feels fine and the middle scalds. A hob does it faster and less evenly still. Warm water in a jug is the way, and the wrist test afterwards catches anything the jug missed.

Four cots. Which is the one?
That one. Back, bare, sleeping bag, feet to foot. Notice the first cot had the baby on its back and was still wrong, because the pillow and the bumper are exactly what a baby can end up with over its face.
No. Say the rule back to yourself: on their back, cot empty. A baby on its front or its side is the wrong position, and a cot with a pillow, a bumper, a toy or a loose blanket is the wrong cot. Only one of the four has both parts right.
