Cuts, scrapes and bleeding

First Aid badge

Badge 6 of 7 · First Aid

Lesson 3 of 5 · Step 36 of 43 in the course

Watch, then decide. The next step only opens when you have it right.

Step 1 of 3

Step 1 of 3

Stop the bleeding

  • Press firmly on it with something clean.
  • Gauze and a triangular bandage are the two things absorbent enough to do it.
  • A band-aid is not, and neither is a tissue.
  • Keep pressing. Lifting it off to look is what starts it again.

Watch, then answer this

What actually stops bleeding?

Step 2 of 3

Clean it

  • Clean it with clean water, once the bleeding has stopped.
  • Take your time over it. Rushing this is how dirt stays in.

Watch, then answer this

When do you clean it?

Step 3 of 3

Cover it — and know which call this is

  • Cover it with a clean dressing, to keep bacteria out.
  • Gauze, adhesive bandages, or a clean triangular bandage.
  • A scrape like that is a parent call, not a 911 call.
  • Bleeding that will not stop is the other one.

Watch, then answer this

A scrape you have cleaned and covered. Who do you call?

That is this lesson.

You watched it, you made the call yourself, and you got it right. That is the whole lesson — nothing here was read to pass.

Now do it

Off the screen, before you leave this page

Watching is not the same as being able to do it. Stand up and work through these. Nothing here is marked and nothing is sent anywhere — the ticks are yours.

Step 1 — Press, and keep pressing. Close on hands pressing a folded gauze pad firmly onto a forearm and holding it there. A tissue is picked up first, considered, and put back down in favour of the gauze. No blood is visible at any point — the pad and the pressure carry it.

Step 2 — Clean water. A forearm held under a running tap, water going over the area for a while. Unhurried. Then patted dry with something clean. Domestic and ordinary.

Step 3 — A clean dressing. A clean dressing taped over a forearm, then the child picking up a phone and calling a parent. Undramatic; the call is a normal part of it, not an escalation.

Every film on this page is narrated and carries a caption track, supplied as a sidecar and never burned into the picture.
