S — Scan the area first

  • Scan the area first, with your senses, for danger.
  • Only when it is safe do you go to the person — and then you scan them.
  • Is he awake? Is he breathing? Is there bad bleeding?
  • If he is awake and breathing: ask what happened, where it hurts, and whether he can walk.

C — Call

You have seen this one before, in another badge. Same moment, same rule.

  • 911 if any of the emergency signs are there — or ask a bystander to call.
  • If it is a scraped knee, you call a parent instead.
  • Asking a specific person to call works better than asking everybody.

A — Act, within what you know

  • Help, and do what you actually know how to do.
  • Plus whatever the operator tells you — they will talk you through it.
  • Doing one useful thing properly beats trying everything you half remember.

    Step 1 — Not straight to him. A boy comes off his bike across a suburban road. Another child starts forward, then stops at the curb and checks the traffic both ways before crossing. Only then do they reach him. The pause at the curb is the whole shot. No injury is shown.

    Step 2. The same clip you saw earlier in the course, shown again because the rule is the same one.

    Step 3 — What you actually know how to do. A child kneeling beside another who is sitting up and talking, pressing a folded cloth on a forearm, phone on speaker beside them. Calm, competent, unheroic. Nothing beyond what a child could really do.

    Step 4 — Write it down. Afterward, calm again: a child writing a few lines on a notepad at the kitchen table, and a first aid guide sitting on the shelf beside them. Quiet and matter-of-fact.
