Calling for help
You can call 911, answer their questions and say your address.
1Watch
The kitchen floor
The kitchen floor
Grandad on the kitchen floor, not answering, and a kid standing over him with the house phone in her hand.
16 secondsIt stops there. She has the phone. Now what?
2The idea
The Emergency Order
Am I safe? Call. Do what they say. Write it down.
Am I safe: look around first.
Call: 911.
Do what they say: they tell you, one step at a time.
Write it down: a grown-up does this bit, later.
You do not need to know what to do. They know. Your job is to call and stay on.
3The idea
What they will ask
Three questions. What happened. Where are you. What is your name.
Where are you means your address. Number, street, town. Say it in that order, slowly. Then stay on the phone. Do not hang up, even to ring Mum.
4The idea
Maya makes the call
Grandad is on the floor. He is not answering. Maya looks around. Nothing else is wrong, so she is safe. She calls 911.
They ask what happened. She says Grandad fell and will not wake up. They ask where. She says her address. They say stay on the phone. She stays on. They tell her what to do next.
5Your turn
The practice call
Practice call
A pretend 911 call. The questions come one at a time: what happened, where are you, what is your name. Your address is a saved field, so you can read it.
Say your answers out loud. Short is fine.
6Decide
They say: stay on the phone. Grandad still is not moving. What now?
Pick one to carry on.
7Look
Your address
Your address
A house from the front with a big number on the door, and the street sign at the corner.
Number, street, town. That is your address. Say it in that order.
8Find them
When do you call 911?
Tap the ones that count.
Find all 4.
9The idea
Never in trouble
Maybe Grandad was only asleep. Maybe the fire was a bit of toast. You are never in trouble for calling. Not once.
The people who answer want you to call when you are not sure. A call that turns out fine is still a good call.
10Again
You called 911. Grandad was only asleep. Are you in trouble?
Pick one to carry on.
11Do it
Before you leave this page
Say your full address out loud without looking at anything. Number, street, town. A grown-up checks it.
Tick it when you have done it.
Lesson done.
Am I safe? Call 911. Do what they say. You are never in trouble for calling.
