Know two ways out of your bedroom. The door is one. The window might be the other. Ask a grown-up which windows open.

One way might be full of smoke. Then you use the other. Know both before you need them.

How you go

Walk. You will trip if you run. If there is smoke, get low and go. Smoke goes up. The clean air is near the floor.

Then outside, to the meeting place. The big tree. The lamp post. The neighbour’s step. Somewhere outside that everybody knows.

Ella, the teddy and the cat

The alarm goes. Ella’s teddy is on the bed. The cat is under it. Ella wants both.

Ella goes. Only Ella. At the meeting place she tells Mum about the cat. Firefighters get cats out. Once you are out, you stay out. Not a toy, not a pet.

5Say it

The rule in four words

Say this in your normal voice

“Out, and stay out.”

Say it now. When the alarm goes, your feet will remember.

6Decide

The alarm goes. Teddy is on the bed. Grab it?

Right. You go, and only you. Teddy is not the job. Out is the job.

Quick is how people get stuck. Nothing goes with you. Not a toy, not a pet. Out.

You do not go back in for anything. Not a toy, not a pet. You tell a grown-up. They are the ones who go in.
