Prevent
- Never play with matches, lighters or candles. If you find any, tell an adult — do not move them.
- An adult with you to cook or bake. Most house fires start in the kitchen.
- Unplug chargers when you disconnect a device.
- Prevention is mostly spotting things and removing them before they start.

Detect
- Use your senses — see, smell, hear, feel. And then the machine that does it while you are asleep.
- A working smoke detector on every floor, and near where people sleep.
- You test it by pushing the test button.
- Do it with a parent this week, so you both know what it sounds like.

The one you cannot detect yourself

Step 1 — Before it starts. A short sweep of a home putting things right: matches on a high shelf being pointed out to an adult rather than moved, a charger unplugged, a dish towel moved away from the stove, plugs taken out of a crowded outlet. Practical and tidy.
Step 2 — Push the button. A parent lifts a child so they can press the test button on a ceiling smoke detector. It sounds. Both of them react to how loud it is, and laugh. The point is that they have now both heard it.
