The power goes off. All of it. It is half past four and getting dark.
Bucket two. Nobody is hurt and nothing is getting worse. Dark is uncomfortable, not dangerous. A parent will know whether it is the whole street, and if you have to go to the backup place they will say so.
Ask the two questions. Anyone hurt? No. Getting worse? No. That is a message, not a call, and 911 is for the short list. Leaving the house to check the street is a plan change nobody agreed. Torch, fridge shut, message, sit down.

3Decide
The lights go off. Where is your light?
The torch. No flame, no smoke, and it works lying on its side on the floor. If you cannot find it, the phone torch is fine for as long as the battery lasts, which is another reason it was charging on the desk.
A candle in a dark house with one person in it is a fire nobody is watching. The fuse box is for a parent, on the phone, telling you which switch. Torch first, then message, then sit down.

5Decide
You smell rotten eggs in the kitchen. The light is off and it is dim.
Out, then call. Door left open on your way, no switches, no phone until you are outside. The gas people will tell you when it is fine to go back, and that is not your call to make.
A switch or a phone can make a spark, and gas plus a spark is the whole danger. Opening a window feels sensible and keeps you inside with the gas. Out first, phone out on the pavement.

Read the first line as a parent at work. One of those tells her you are panicking and nothing else. The other tells her nothing at all until she has time, which might be an hour. The thing goes first. Where you are. What you did.
