2Decide
It is ten to ten. The parent messages: running late, back by quarter to eleven. What is the next thing you do?
Right. Five seconds, and your parent’s picture of the night is accurate again. It also means that if 10:45 comes and goes with no parent and no answer, your own parent already knows something is off.
Not quite. Forty-five minutes is nothing to you and a lot to a parent expecting you at half ten. And the client running late is not a reason to leave a child, though the next lesson covers a ride home that does not depend on them. The move is one short message.

3Decide
Dad says: come on, I'll run you back. He has had a couple of drinks. Your dad is ten minutes away. What do you say?
Right. Warm, short, and it is not a refusal, it is a fact. Notice you never had to judge whether he was fit to drive. The plan already answered that, three days ago, at your own kitchen table.
Think again. Getting in makes you the passenger of someone who has been drinking, and asking him whether he is OK makes you the judge of that, at thirteen, in his hallway. Neither is your job. Your dad is on his way. That sentence does all the work.

5Decide
The parents were due at eleven. It is half twelve, they are not back and not answering. The kids are asleep. What do you do?
Right. Two things at once: you are not alone with the problem any more, and the kids are never alone at all. Your parent can ring the clients, ring the second adult from the handover, and decide what happens next. That stops being your call the moment they answer.
Not that. Waiting alone at half twelve with parents who do not answer is exactly the moment somebody should know. Leaving is never an option while children are in the house. The answer is your parent, at the house, and you with the kids until then.
