Get up and walk out
- Get up and walk out. Do not run — you might trip, and in smoke you cannot see what you are tripping over.
- Out first, phone second. Call from outside, or from a neighbor.
- Never go back in. Not for a pet, not for a phone, not for anything.

Two ways out of every room
- Two ways out of every room. Every room.
- Work out the second one now, not then.
- Out and about too: look for the exits at the movie theater or the arena when you arrive.
- If an alarm sounds, do not stand there wondering whether it is a false alarm until you are safely outside.

Why the plan matters more than the rules
- In a real fire there is a great deal of confusion.
- A plan means everybody already knows what to do and where to meet the moment the detector goes off.
- Children practice fire drills at school every year. Most families never practice one at home.

Step 1 — Do not run. Night, smoke at ceiling height, low light. A family moving quickly but walking, staying low. No flames on screen and nobody in distress — the film is about the walking, not the fire.
Step 2 — Every room. A walk through a house naming the second way out of each room — a window onto a porch roof, a back door, a side door. Deliberately domestic and calm, in daylight.
Step 3 — Everybody already knew. A detector sounds and a family moves without anybody giving instructions, meeting at a fixed point outside. The absence of shouting is the point.
