Source inventory & open-item reconciliation

Everything that exists in the eight 2017 archives, measured by unpacking them — not estimated. Plus every open request from Velma’s messages and Rachel’s 26 August email, in one list. 26 August 2026.

1. The Walk Home film — found

RESOLVEDVelma was right. The film was in the archive I had never unpacked.

I reported this file as missing and recommended generating a replacement. It was inside MODULE-1-STREET-SMARTS-LMS-TEST.zip the whole time. Velma said “ask him to unzip the SCORM files for Module 1” — that is exactly where it was.

Verified: 11.477 s · 768×432 · h264 + aac · 3,173,283 bytes. Frame-checked end to end: a boy walks a suburban sidewalk with headphones on and both eyes on his phone; a car passes close in front of him at about 8 s while he stands at the kerb; he takes the headphones off at about 10 s. That is panels 3, 4 and 5 of lesson 1.3, shot for real.

Storyboard corrected. FLAG-05 now reads USE HER FILM, and panels 3–5 are tagged REUSE rather than GENERATE.

Two things still need her answer: the film is 768×432, well below the 1080p everything else renders at, so it needs upscaling; and Rachel’s edit note refers to a look-left / look-right at 0:15, but this clip ends at 0:11.5 — so either that beat is one of the 102 Flash animations in the same package, or the timecode is the lesson timeline rather than the clip.

2. What is actually in the 2017 archives — all seven badges

Every archive in the media library, opened and counted. Video = playable MP4. Narration = individual recorded audio files. Flash = .swf animations, which are not extractable as video. Slides = full-size flattened artwork renders.

What that means in practice

There is far more usable original material than my last report suggested, and I was wrong to say otherwise. Across the course there are 28 playable video files, 777 recorded narration files and 329 slide renders that can be used directly.

  • Badge 1 Street Smarts has one film — the walk home, above. Its map, its five rule cards and its route worksheet all exist as artwork.
  • Badges 3, 4 and 7 are the richest — 5, 6 and 7 films each.
  • Badges 5 and 6 have no video at all. Fire Safety and Accident Prevention are Flash animation and narration only, so those two will have to be made.
  • The Flash files are the one real loss. 974 .swf animations, and I checked every one of them for an embedded video stream — none has one. They are vector animation, not film. Those beats have to be remade.

3. Rachel’s email of 26 August — Badge 2, People Safety

BLOCKINGNarration is cut off mid-word when a question appears

She said
Lessons 4, 5 and 6. Three separate reports of the same fault: the gate fires before the sentence finishes. In lesson 5 the line must complete “ask for the code word” before the question is asked.

My reading
This is one bug, not three. The gate time is being taken from the video timeline instead of the end of the narration line. Fix it once, in the player, and re-measure every gate in the badge against the audio — not against a timecode.

BLOCKINGOn a phone, the question panel cannot be scrolled

She said
The last option and the “keep watching” button are unreachable; she had to toggle Questions off and on repeatedly.

My reading
Not a her-issue — a real layout bug, and the most serious item in her list because it stops a child completing the badge on the device most of them will use.

AUDIONo audio on answers in the trust meter (lessons 6 and 7)

She said
Clicking the right answer reads nothing aloud. Also lesson 6: the safe-strangers ending has no audio at all — she supplied the full script to record.

My reading
Her script is long and specific. Record it verbatim in the narrator voice; do not paraphrase it.

AUDIOMultiple different voices read the answers aloud in lesson 5

She said
And in lesson 7, Brandon’s lines “I don’t know this person” / “Something doesn’t feel right” / “She doesn’t know my code word” need a different voice.

My reading
Same root cause as the badge-wide voice work: rebuild from the transcript in the roster voice, never patch line by line.

CASTINGThree cast changes

She said
(a) an adult blonde woman handing the boy a game console, for “Which feelings mean a secret is not safe?”; (b) the woman who picks him up should be a younger grandmother; (c) when a child is meant to look sad, they should look close to tears.

My reading
All three are single-shot regenerations against the existing locks.

DIVERSITYAll the tricky people are white men

She said
“Here are some of the situations that should set off your trust meter” — she asks for diversity in age, sex and appearance.

My reading
This lands squarely on the 22 August decision. That decision put diversity in the town and kept it out of the lure casting — which is exactly what produced the pattern she is now objecting to. The two cannot both stand. Recommended: vary the tricky people by AGE and SEX (an older woman, a teenager, a middle-aged man), which answers her note without reopening the ethnicity decision. Velma’s call.

INTERACTIONThe safety-rules tap activity

She said
She wants the stop signs revealed one at a time, read aloud, and only when tapped in the correct order — and sent a reference picture.

My reading
Her reference shows FIVE rules, numbered #1 to #5, but she calls it ‘the 6 safety rules’ — and Velma also called it ‘the 6 safety rules’ in messages. Five or six has to be settled before this is built. The reference image is now in the media library.

CONTINUITYLesson 11 — the officer holds up three fingers, not four

She said
She counts NO GO YELL TELL but only shows three fingers by the third question.

My reading
A re-render of that beat. The officer film was rebuilt yesterday, so this must be checked against the current cut before anything is remade.

CONTENTLesson 12 — the quiz pictures do not match the questions

She said
Every ‘your turn’ quiz question shows an image unrelated to what is being asked.

My reading
Same fault Velma raised for Badge 1 (“the only thing missing is images of the situations in the questions”). The fix is the rule I have already applied to Badge 1’s quiz cards: each question sits over the still from the lesson that taught it.

PROPOSES A CUTLesson 6 — delete the butterflies question?

She said
“You get a strange feeling like butterflies in your stomach, what is that?” — she suggests deleting it because the narrator is cut off.

My reading
Do not delete a teaching question to work around a timing bug. Fix the gate timing and keep the question; it is the only place in the badge that names the physical feeling. If she still wants it gone after hearing it uncut, that is a content decision, not a workaround.

4. Still open from Velma’s messages

Seven badges, not eight — and the order

She is right on both counts and my own file was wrong. It listed eight, including a ‘Safety’ badge at position 5 that does not exist — almost certainly the second line of the AT HOME / SAFETY badge read as its own badge. Corrected. But a real conflict remains: her recorded narration names them in a different order than the board (positions 3/4 and 6/7 are swapped). Her reveal lights each badge as it is named, so if the narration keeps her order and the board keeps ours, the reveal desynchronises at badge 3. This must be settled before the intro film is recut.

Predator voices and repeated faces

“The woman speaks with a man’s voice… the teenager on the bike is now a young woman with a man’s voice. All the characters look the same, they have the same face.” New characters were generated; needs her confirmation on the current cut.

“The 6 safety rules still has the robotic narrator”

Rebuilt with the fun-Josh voice. Needs re-checking with a cleared cache — and see the five-versus-six question above.

NO GO YELL TELL should appear on screen word by word

As the officer says each word, in the space to her right. Not yet built.

Badge 3 or Badge 4 next?

She has Badge 4 content ready but says it makes more sense to finish 1 and 2 properly first. Nothing to decide until Badge 1 is signed off — but the inventory above means we now know what every badge contains before starting it.

6. Velma’s direct question — the Trust Meter and the Instincts explanations

THE ANSWERThey were never video. They were Flash.

I opened Badge 2’s archive and searched every file in it. “Trust meter” and “instinct” appear only inside the Flash slide data — never in a video file, and there is no video of them anywhere in the package. The Trust Meter was built as an interactive Flash object: a gauge, a set of feeling icons and a magnifying glass, driven by recorded narration, with the child clicking through it.

The artwork all survives. Here are the original Trust Meter slides pulled straight out of the archive — the YES-Trust / NO-Do-Not-Trust gauge, the three feeling states (“I feel uncomfortable and/or worried”, “I feel scared and/or sad”, “I feel confused and/or funny”), the silhouettes with question marks, the magnifier, and the tricky-people photographs:

Original Trust Meter slides

So: nothing was lost or thrown away, and nothing was overwritten. The pictures and the narration are intact and reusable. What cannot be recovered is the interactivity — Flash is a compiled animation format and the movement inside those files cannot be turned back into video. I checked all 974 .swf files across all seven badges for an embedded video stream; none of them has one. That is why the Trust Meter had to be rebuilt as a new interaction rather than re-used.

What I should do differently: the rebuilt Trust Meter should use her original gauge artwork and her three feeling states rather than my redrawn versions, so it looks like the course she already had. That is a change I can make quickly now that the files are open.

7. And something I did not expect to find

RECOVEREDThe real Sergeant Mungar interview — 3 minutes 20 seconds of live action

Badge 2’s archive contains two original films, not one. The one I already knew about is Mr. Taylor (46 s). The other is a genuine filmed interview with Sergeant Mungar at Halton Police, 200 seconds long, with a girl asking him questions on camera. It carries its own PEOPLE / SOS4KIDS title card and an on-screen name tag.

This matters because we have been generating an animated officer for Badge 2. A real officer, in uniform, in a real police station, is more credible to a child than anything I can render — and it is her own footage. Before any more officer work is done on Badge 2, somebody should decide whether the animated officer stays or whether this film is cut in. That is Velma’s call and it is worth a minute of her time.

Full-resolution master: 796×448, 52 MB — too large for the media library’s upload limit, so the preview above is a reduced copy. The master is held and can be delivered directly.

8. Badge 1’s own artwork, all of it

Every slide in the Street Smarts package, flattened. The neighbourhood map, the five yellow rule cards with their photographs (“Be aware!”, “Don’t take shortcuts!”, “Follow the rules of the road!”, “Avoid strangers!”, “Walk with a group. Don’t delay!”), the HOME-to-SCHOOL route worksheet, the badge challenge and congratulations screens:

Original Badge 1 slides

Note the rule cards: there are FIVE, not six. That is the same five-versus-six question Rachel’s tap-activity note raises for Badge 2.

9. What I got wrong

I said the Badge 1 video was unavailable because the old content was “locked up in .swf or .ppt files.” That was half right and wholly misleading. The Flash files genuinely cannot be converted — I have now checked all 974 of them for embedded video and none has any. But that was never the reason the walk-home film was missing. The reason is that I searched the media library and never opened the archive sitting in it.

A file inside an unopened zip is not a missing file. The rule I am writing down from this: an inventory is not complete until every container in it has been opened. Velma told me where to look and she was right.
