You are sitting on a Class 2, one foot still down, and your thumb finds the throttle.
Yes. That is the whole difference between a throttle and pedal assist — a throttle does not wait for you to be ready. It is also the reason the first ten minutes on a new machine belong in an empty parking lot rather than on a road.
That is the pedal-assist answer. Assist only adds power once you are already pedalling, so it cannot surprise you at a standstill. A throttle delivers power with no input from you, so the machine can be moving while you still have a foot on the ground. Start slow, and start somewhere empty.

Your friend is 15 and has just been given a Class 3.
Right. Class 3 is 16 in Illinois, and nearly 16 is not 16. Reading the label is the useful thing they can do today, and a fair number of riders find out at exactly that moment that their machine is not the class they were told it was.
Check the numbers again. Class 1 and Class 2 start at 15. Class 3 starts at 16. A 15-year-old on a Class 3 is riding something the state does not let them ride yet, and police may impound it.

You squeeze the rear brake in the drive and the lever comes nearly to the bar.
Yes. A soft lever means the pads, the cable or the fluid, and none of those repair themselves on the way somewhere. It is also one of the cheapest jobs on the machine, which is not true of what happens when a brake fails at speed.
Not on this machine. One working brake on something this heavy is a plan that holds right up until the moment it has to be a good plan. The whole point of doing the check in the drive is that a fault costs you a ride instead of a junction.

Yes, and the reason is worth having. The charger, the battery and the machine are designed as one electrical system, and the fire service instruction is to use only the cord, adapter and battery that came with it. Not riding for four days is the cheap option in this comparison.
This is the exact thing the fire brigade names. Use only the manufacturer’s cord, adapter and battery. A charger that fits the socket is not the same as a charger that handles that battery properly, and charging is where most of these incidents happen.
