1Decide
Which one passes?
Right. Eyes: look up and you can just see the rim. Ears: the straps make a V that meets just under each ear. Mouth: open wide and the helmet pulls down a little. If it does not pull, the strap is loose.
Not that one. Tipped back leaves the forehead bare, which is the bit that hits first. Unbuckled means it is off before you land. Too far forward and you cannot see properly, which causes the crash it was meant to help with.

3Decide
You are about to turn across the road. What is the order?
Right. Look back first, because the signal is for whoever is there. Then hold the arm out long enough to be seen. Then find the driver’s eyes. If you cannot find them, you have not been seen, and you wait.
The order matters. A signal nobody has seen is just your arm in the air. Turning before you look is a bet that nobody is coming. Look back, signal, get the driver’s eyes, then go.

5Decide
Which stretch do you slow right down for?
Right. Every door is a person who cannot see you yet. The driveways are a close second, by the way: a car reversing out cannot see a scooter over a hedge. The park railing is the only stretch where you can actually see the end.
Look at what you cannot see. The park railing you can see the whole way along. The driveways are real, and you slow for those too. But a shop door is a blind spot with a person already behind it, and a bus stop is six people about to turn round. That is the stretch you slow to walking pace for.
