Which of these kids does the driver see first?
Right. Notice it is all three at once: light clothes, a light in your hand, and a place that is already lit. Any one of them helps. All three and you are the most obvious thing on the street.
Look again. Dark clothes on a dark pavement are close to invisible from a moving car, and between two parked vans you do not exist until you step out. The question is never what you can see. It is what the driver can.

3Decide
Which of these is a plan?
Right. A plan has a name in it and a place where it ends. When you split at the corner shop, you both know that is where it happened, and so does the parent you told.
Not quite a plan. A plan says who, and it says where it stops. “Sort of the same way” means nobody notices when you are gone, because nobody agreed you were there in the first place.

They have crossed twice. You are four streets from home. Where do you go?
Right. Inside, you tell the person at the counter that somebody is following you and you want to ring a parent. Staff deal with this. It is what the counter is for. And if it turns out he was just walking to the same chemist, you have lost nothing at all.
Not home. Going home shows them where you live, and a front door takes longer to open than you think. The cut-through takes you somewhere with nobody in it, which is exactly where they would like you to go. Go where there are people whose job it is to be there.

7Decide
The window is down. What is your first move?
Right. Back, not forward. You can still hear from two steps back, and you can still see who it is. What you have done is put a bit of pavement between you and the door, and that bit of pavement is the whole plan.
Step back first. Leaning in puts you in reach of the door. Walking on the way the car is pointing means it can idle along beside you all the way home. Two steps back, then turn and walk the way it is not facing. A car cannot follow you backwards down a street.
