If they are hurt

When a younger one is hurt, call, stay with them, and do not move them unless they are in danger where they are.

A garden. A younger kid drops off the top of a climbing frame and lands badly. The older one is at the back door with a drink. The film ends on the older one's face.

2The idea

The rule that removes the judgement call

When they are hurt, you call. You do not decide whether it is serious enough. A doctor takes years to learn to judge that. You have thirty seconds and a crying brother. So the rule takes the judging off you.

Looks bad, or you are not sure: 911. Small: call a parent. Either way, you call. You do not decide. 911 is for: will not wake, cannot breathe properly, a lot of blood, a limb at a wrong angle, knocked out. A parent is for the grazed knee, the bumped shin, the tears that turn back into playing.

3The idea

Stay with them. Do not move them.

Stay: a hurt little kid needs to see you. Sit on the floor next to them. Talk. Phone on speaker. Do not leave to fetch things unless the operator tells you to.

Do not move them unless they are in danger where they are: in the road, in water, next to a fire, lying on glass. Moving somebody after a bad fall can make it worse. If they must move, the shortest possible way. Stay. Do not move them. Do what they say.

The sentence for a parent, a neighbour, or the operator

Say it clearly, like you mean now

“My brother's hurt and I need you now.”

Swap in sister, or their name. It is the first line of the call, before the details.

5The idea

Ruby, Max, and the climbing frame

Max is screaming, holding his arm. Ruby does not decide. 911, address first: My brother fell off the climbing frame, he’s holding his arm, he’s awake and crying. Operator: Don’t move him. Keep him warm. Is the front door unlocked? She sits on the grass beside him with the phone on speaker.

Broken wrist. Fixed. Another day: Max grazes his knee. She sits with him, cleans it, rings Mum: Max grazed his knee, cleaned it, he’s fine. Same shape, smaller number. She called both times, and decided neither time.

6Decide

He has come off his bike on the drive. Crying, holding his arm, but talking.

Stay, call, do not move him. He is talking, so you know he is breathing and awake, and that is what you tell the operator. The drive is not dangerous, so he stays where he landed until somebody who knows says otherwise.

Two of these are you deciding, and deciding is the thing the rule takes away. Carrying him in moves an arm that might be broken. Waiting to see is judging how bad it is. Sit down next to him, call, and let somebody else judge.
