Arguments
Use the pre-agreed row rule, step apart, wait, then talk, and message if it does not hold.
1Watch
Four in the afternoon, again
Four in the afternoon, again
Two kids on a sofa, one remote, voices getting louder. The older one opens her mouth to shout back, and the film stops on the breath before it.
15 secondsYou know this one. Everybody with a sibling knows this one.
2The idea
Decided in advance
Every pair of siblings has the same three rows: the remote, the last one of something, and who touched who. You know which yours are. So the rule for rows gets agreed on a calm morning, with a parent, not at four in the afternoon when you are both already shouting.
A rule you made when you were calm is the one that works when you are not. Nobody makes a good rule mid-row. That is not a flaw in you. It is how rows work.
3The idea
Step apart, wait, then talk
Step apart: different rooms. You go to the kitchen. Nobody has to win the step.
Wait: ten minutes, with a timer if it helps. The Feeling Dial comes down by itself if you let it.
Then talk: one sentence each. Not the whole history.
Nobody wins an argument at volume. Volume is the one thing a younger kid can match you on, so do not compete there. If it does not hold, they follow you, it goes physical, something breaks, that is a message: Row with Max, we’ve stepped apart, he’s fine.
4Say it
The step-apart sentence
Say it flat, not angry, like reading a sign
“I'm stepping apart. Ten minutes.”
Then go. Do not wait for a reply, and do not answer one.
5The idea
Ruby and Max, and the remote
Ruby: I’m going in the kitchen for ten minutes. Max shouts after her. She does not answer. Timer on. At nine minutes Max comes in and says sorry. They agree: his programme to the end, then hers. Nobody won. The afternoon got smaller.
The other version: Max follows her, hitting. She goes to her room, shuts the door, messages. Mum rings Max. Done. You do not have to sort it. You have to keep it from getting bigger until somebody is home.
6Decide
She is shouting. You are about to shout back.
Pick one to carry on.
7Try it
A row with two ways out
The row
A row over the remote plays out. At each turn you choose: shout, give in, or step apart. One branch ends with the timer running out and a calm sentence. The other ends with a message to a parent. Both are good endings.
Try the shout branch once. Notice how it always gets longer, never shorter.
8Find them
Which of these are a message to a parent, not a fight?
Tap the ones that count.
Find all 4.
9Do it
Before you leave this page
Tonight, when nobody is cross, agree one house rule for rows with your sibling and a parent. Write it down. Both of you sign it.
Tick it when you have done it.
Lesson done.
Agreed on a calm morning. Step apart. Wait. Then talk. Nobody wins at volume.
