Cold food is your friend

Make yourself a real snack with no heat, and know exactly what your family's microwave rule is.

Step 1 of 9

1Look

The fridge, open

Still image

The fridge, open

An ordinary fridge with the door open: cheese, yoghurt, a bowl of grapes, leftover pasta in a tub, a jug of juice, hummus, a cucumber.

Most of what is in here is yours, right now, without asking. One thing is not. Guess which.

2The idea

The line is heat

Everything that needs no heat is yours: bread, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, crackers, hummus, cold chicken, cereal, a wrap. That is a lot. Cold food is not the boring option. It is the one that is yours without asking.

Hot food has two problems for a kid on their own. It can burn you, and it can start a fire. Neither is likely. Both are the two things a home-alone afternoon cannot afford. So hot is a family decision, not a hunger decision.

3The idea

The microwave rule

Some families say yes to the microwave. Some say not yet. Some say yes for things with a time printed on the packet. Whatever yours says, it is written into the agreement, and you do not change it because you are hungry.

If yours is a yes: nothing metal, nothing sealed, and you stand there while it runs. Stir, then wait a minute, because hot spots burn mouths. Whatever your family’s microwave rule is, it is the rule, not a suggestion.

4The idea

Kai makes a snack

Bread, cheese, a handful of grapes, crackers, a plate. He eats it sitting down at the table. Then the plate goes in the sink, the crumbs get wiped, the cheese goes back in the fridge. Four minutes, start to finish.

The clearing up is not the boring end of the snack. It is how a parent knows the kitchen was used by someone who can be trusted with more of it. A kitchen you leave clean is how the microwave rule gets changed.

5Build it

Interactive

The fridge game

An on-screen fridge and cupboard. Drag things onto a plate. The page scores it for two things: is it safe to make alone, and is it actually food. A plate of six biscuits scores low on the second one.

Try to make something you would actually eat. Then try to make something that scores zero, so you know where the line is.

6Decide

Your family's rule is no microwave yet. You are starving and there is leftover pasta in the fridge.

Right. The pasta will still be there at six, and so will a person to heat it with. Hungry is uncomfortable. It is not a reason. Notice that the rule was written down so that you would not have to argue with yourself about it.
The rule is about heat, not about which machine makes it. The stove is further up the waits list than the microwave, not lower. And only pasta is exactly what the rule is for: the small hot thing on the day nobody is home. Cold now, pasta at six.

Pick one to carry on.

7Look

The kitchen after

Still image

The kitchen after

A clean kitchen counter with one plate drying on the rack and the fridge door shut.

This is what a parent sees when they get in. It is the whole argument for a longer Allowed list, and you do not have to say a word.

8Find them

Which of these are yours right now, no asking?

Tap the ones that count.

Find all 4.

9Do it

Before you leave this page

Make yourself something cold, eat it sitting down, and clear up after. The kitchen should look like nobody was in it.

Tick it when you have done it.

Lesson done.

Everything that needs no heat is yours. The microwave rule is whatever your family wrote down.
