The Feeding Yourself Badge Challenge

8 questions from the 4 lessons in this badge. You need every one right, and you can try as many times as you like.

Step 1 of 8

1Decide

Your family's rule is no microwave yet. You are starving and there is leftover pasta in the fridge.

Right. The pasta will still be there at six, and so will a person to heat it with. Hungry is uncomfortable. It is not a reason. Notice that the rule was written down so that you would not have to argue with yourself about it.
The rule is about heat, not about which machine makes it. The stove is further up the waits list than the microwave, not lower. And only pasta is exactly what the rule is for: the small hot thing on the day nobody is home. Cold now, pasta at six.

Pick the right one to carry on.

2Find them

Which of these are yours right now, no asking?

Tap the ones that count.

Find all 4.

3Decide

Toast is stuck. What is first?

Off at the wall first. Then it is just a metal box with bread in it, and you can tip it or fish it out however you like. The order is the whole thing.
Anything that goes into a toaster that is still plugged in can meet the wires. A fork is metal. Tipping it while it is live is the same problem from a different angle. Plug out, wait, then deal with the toast.

Pick the right one to carry on.

4Find them

Which of these are how a kitchen fire starts?

5Decide

Three grips. Pick the one that keeps fingers.

The claw. The blade rests on knuckles and cannot get to fingertips that are tucked away. It feels odd for about a week, and then it is the only way you can hold food.
Look at where the blade ends up if it slips. Flat fingers put fingertips exactly where the knife is going. Cutting in the air aims the knife at your own hand. The claw is the only grip where a slip meets bone, not fingertip.

Pick the right one to carry on.

6Find them

Which of these make a cut go wrong?

Tap the ones that count.

Find all 4.

7Decide

Your brother is coughing hard, eyes streaming, over a bit of apple.

Right. Coughing is his body doing the job. Your job is to watch it work and be ready if it stops. If the cough stops and he goes quiet, that is the moment the phone comes out.
A cough is air moving, and air moving is what you want. A slap can push the apple somewhere worse. Water gives him a second thing to choke on. Stay, watch, and let the cough do its job.

Pick the right one to carry on.

8Find them

Which of these mean call 911 now?
