You have come in and locked the door. Your phone is on two percent. What is the message?
Right. Two percent is enough for four letters. The message is the step that stops a clock in a parent’s head, and it does that at any battery level. Then charge it, on a desk, not the bed.
The message is not a report. It is a clock-stopper. A proper message in ten minutes is ten minutes of a parent not knowing. And nobody can see that you are not out. One word, now, then everything else.

3Decide
You have locked the front door. The bathroom window upstairs is open, over the flat roof. It is small.
Now, before the snack. The sofa does not give people back. Small windows over flat roofs are the ones that get used, precisely because everybody thinks they are too small to matter.
The window does not close itself, and the snack will wait. Small and upstairs feels safe. Flat roof under it means it is a ground-floor window with extra steps. Go up now, while it is still in your head.

5Decide
It is twenty past four. Nothing on the list is interesting. A friend messages: come round, my mum's home.
Right. His mum being home is a good reason, and a good reason still goes through the ask. Going out is a waits on nearly every family’s list, because the one person whose job it is to know where you are does not know yet.
Whose house you go to is not the question. Who knows you went is. A message from his sofa tells your parent after the fact, and after is not permission. The ask takes twenty seconds, and the answer is usually yes.
