Crossing

You can cross a road on purpose: corner, look, look again, driver's face, go.

1Watch

The corner

Film

The corner

A kid at a corner with a grown-up, a car coming, the kid looking left, right, then left again, and her foot lifting off the kerb.

16 seconds

It stops with her foot in the air. Does she go?

2The idea

Where you cross

You cross at the corner, at the lights, or with the crossing person. Nowhere else.

Drivers look for people at corners and stripes. Cross where the driver is already looking for you. Closer is not safer.

3The idea

The steps

Corner. Left. Right. Left again. Face. Go.
Stop at the kerb.
Look left. Look right.
Look again at the near lane, the one that reaches you first.
See the driver’s face.
Then step.

Every time. Even when the road looks empty.

4The idea

Ruby and the windscreen

A car is slowing. The sun is on the windscreen. Ruby cannot see the driver. Slowing is not stopped.

Ruby waits. The car stops. The driver looks at her and nods. Now she goes. If you cannot see their face, they cannot see yours.

5Say it

The steps out loud

Say the steps in your normal voice

“Corner. Left. Right. Left again. Face. Go.”

Say it at every kerb until your feet do it on their own.

6Decide

Where do you cross?

Right. Drivers look for people at corners and at stripes. Cross where they are already looking.
Closer is not safer. Drivers look for you at corners and at lights. In the middle of the street, nobody is looking for you.

Pick one to carry on.

7Look

The driver's face

Still image

The driver's face

A car stopped at a crossing. Through the windscreen, the driver looking straight at the kid on the kerb.

Catch the driver’s eye. If you cannot see their face, they cannot see yours.

8Again

The car is slowing. Sun on the windscreen. You cannot see the driver. Step?

Right. Slowing is not stopped. And a face you cannot see has not seen you.
Slowing means the driver saw something. Maybe you. Maybe the light. Until you see their eyes, you do not know. Wait.

Pick one to carry on.

9Your turn

Tap when it is safe

Interactive

Safe to step

Four street scenes with cars moving. Tap the moment it is safe to step off the kerb. Too early and the card shakes and shows why.

Safe is when you can see both ways and a driver has seen you.

10Find them

Where is it okay to cross?

Tap the ones that count.

Find all 4.

11Do it

Before you leave this page

Cross one road with a parent. Say each step out loud. Corner. Left. Right. Left again. Face. Go.

Tick it when you have done it.

Lesson done.

Corner. Left. Right. Left again. See the driver's face. Then go.
