Four grown-ups drawn in a row: a mum, a grandad, a neighbour holding a dog lead, a teacher.

These are one kid’s four people. Yours will look different.

2The idea

Real people, not kinds of people

Not a teacher. Your teacher, with a name. Not a neighbour. The neighbour at number 12, the one with the dog.

Somebody you could ring at nine at night. If you would not ring them, they are not on the list. That is the test.

Your four are grown-ups. Friends are great. But a friend cannot drive over at nine at night. A grown-up can.

At least one of your four does not live in your house. If the problem is in your house, you need somebody outside it.

Priya's four

Priya’s four are Mum, Grandad, Auntie Jo who rings on Sundays, and Mr Lee two doors down. Three of them live somewhere else.

Priya had her cousin on the list. Her cousin is seven. Priya took her off. People move on and off your list. That is normal.

Who goes on your list?

Yes. She knows you. She would pick up. She would come. That is the whole test.

A friend is great. A friend cannot drive over at nine at night. Your four people are grown-ups who know you and would come.

Right. If the problem is in your house, you need someone outside it. Two doors down is perfect.

Mum is on the list. But she is in the house. If the house is the problem, you need someone outside it. That is what the neighbour is for.
