Keeping you safe is a grown-up's job
You can say that being looked after is owed to you, not earned.
1Watch
The school gate
The school gate
A kid comes out of the school gate into a crowd of grown-ups, looks for one face, and lifts a hand to wave.
16 secondsSomebody is there. Watch her look for them.
2The idea
Somebody's job is you
Grown-ups are supposed to keep you safe. That is their job. It is not a favour. You do not have to earn it.
Being looked after is not a prize. It is yours already. Even on a day you were grumpy. Even on a day you broke something.
3The idea
What the job looks like
The job is made of small things. Dinner on the table. A hand at the road. Knowing where you are. Coming when you call at night.
Sometimes the job sounds like no. Not now. Bed time. Seatbelt on. A grown-up saying no is still looking after you.
4The idea
Jay and his dad
Jay wanted to play. Dad said not now, I am cooking. Jay was cross. But dinner is part of the job. Dad was doing it.
Later Dad drove Jay to Grandma’s. He did not check Jay’s seatbelt. That was Dad not doing the job. Same dad. The job is about what happens, not who they are.
5Say it
The sentence you are allowed to say
Say this in your normal voice
“I need some help.”
You will need it on a day when you feel funny and nobody has noticed.
6Decide
A grown-up walks you to school. What is that?
Pick one to carry on.
7The idea
If a grown-up does not do it
If a grown-up does not look after you, that is about them. Never about you. You did not cause it. It is not yours to fix.
You are allowed to ask for help. You are allowed to keep asking, until somebody helps.
8Again
Which grown-up is not doing their job?
Pick one to carry on.
9Look
Ask, and keep asking
The bus stop
A kid tugging the sleeve of a grown-up at a bus stop, a second grown-up standing nearby.
If the first grown-up does not help, ask a different one. Asking twice is allowed.
10Find them
Which of these are a grown-up's job?
Tap the ones that count.
Find all 4.
11Do it
Before you leave this page
Find one grown-up in your house. Tell them one thing that made you feel good today.
Tick it when you have done it.
