Lock the door behind you

  • There is one right answer to what you do first, and everything else in this badge sits on top of it.
  • Before your shoes, before the fridge, before your phone.
  • It takes two seconds, and it is the difference between being home and being home safely.

Then, in this order

  • Take your key out of the door and put it in its usual place. Keys left in locks are the most common way they get lost.
  • Tell your parent you are home. A text is enough — somebody knew when to expect you, and now they know you arrived.
  • Have a look around. Not because something is likely to be wrong, but because noticing takes five seconds.
  • Then you can relax. Food, homework, TV, whatever the rules of your house are.

  • Anything that looks different: you go back out and call your parent from outside.
  • Not from the hallway. Outside.
  • You are not being dramatic, and you will not be in trouble if it turns out to be nothing.

The key rules, where they matter most

  • If you use a code to unlock the door, keep the code secret and cover the keypad.
  • Have a backup plan for a lost key, agreed in advance — who you call, where you go.
  • Never write your address on the keyring.
  • Keep the key hidden until you are at the door, and in the same safe spot every time.

    Step 1 — First, every single time. THE ARRIVING-HOME FILM. Brandon comes in, and the door is locked behind him before anything else happens — before shoes, before the kitchen, before the phone comes out. Shot so the lock is unmistakably the first action.

    Step 2 — The order. The four steps in sequence with no dialogue: key out of the door and into its spot, text sent, a quick look around the room, then sitting down. Deliberately uneventful.

    Step 3 — Back out, and call from outside. Brandon opens the door and something is not as he left it — kept vague and non-frightening. He does not investigate. He steps back out, walks to the sidewalk, and calls from there.

    Step 4 — At the door. Reuse of the badge 1 key beats, cut short and shot at the door: keypad covered, key out of the lock, key into its spot.
